- French/francophone cultures in various historical, social, political, geographical contexts. prereq: 3015
- Class Description:
- In this course, we will explore aspects of Parisian culture, history, identity, and language through the lens of Paris métro stations and their surrounding neighborhoods. Questions framing the course include: How do we define Paris and Parisians? How do Paris neighborhoods reflect linguistic and cultural diversity? Why is the métro essential to understanding Paris? Using a variety of document types (literature, film, images, mass media, music, etc.), we will critically examine topics such as stereotypes, immigration, hipsterism, and food culture.
