- Title: Disability and Medicine in French Graphic Novels. Description: This course will explore the genre of the bande dessinée (BD, or Graphic Novel) and consider how image and text work together to create meaning, narrative and representation. How are disabilities, mental illnesses, depression and other bodymind differences depicted in graphic novels? What is the role of art, memory, and writing in telling these stories? While comics are often associated with superheroes and extraordinary powers, this course will probe how this longstanding French and Francophone artistic and literary genre allows for representation of intimate, ordinary, and poignant experiences of disability.

- Class Description:
- The richness and complexity of disability identity can sometimes be at odds with clinical, medical representations of bodymind differences. How do comics or graphic novels (visual and written art forms, together)-- the French tradition of bandes déssinées (BD)-- reconfigure our knowledges of disability and medicine and the possibilities of disability gain? We will study BD authored by people living with epilepsy, cancer, PTSD, down's syndrome, autism and depression to explore how art and literature allow for powerful self-representation, care, healing, and community.
