Class Description:
Everything you have always wanted to know about French "laïcité" but were afraid to ask! Why is it that American media have such a hard time understanding French secularism? This course will give you all the tools (historical, literary, theoretical) to understand why the French are so attached to their model of State/Church separation and why they are ready to die for preserving the neutral space of public education.
Who Should Take This Class?:
Students who have taken 3015/16 are welcome to take this class.
Learning Objectives:
By understanding the cornerstone of French civic philosophy, students will be able to compare with the history of the US and the debates regarding free speech in both cultures.
Grading:
Written responses: 40
Class participation: 20 (this includes attendance)
Mid term: 20
Final paper: 20
Exam Format:
This class has a final paper. the grading is based on responses, class participation, final paper. There will also be a mid-term exam in class.

Lectures and group discussions
Workload:
Expect reading 30 pages a week in French or in English. Expect writing short response papers, and a final paper (8 pages)
