Public-private partnerships are an essential urban redevelopment tool applied in U.S. cities to accomplish a wide range of development and social objectives. This colloquium will use discussion and project examples to explore the history, current condition, and future of how private- and public-sector organizations interact with each other. In addition to consideration of public-private sector conflict or mutual misunderstanding, together we will also explore how public agencies and private parties identify, structure, implement, and evaluate partnerships that shape community development and real estate development in cities. Students will each choose and give a verbal presentation on a relevant topic to the class in addition to reading and discussion for the course.

Recently, expertise in environmental review and assessment has become a cornerstone of the planning profession, both here and abroad. By first grounding you in the history and theoretical/legislative underpinnings of environmental review, this course will apply respective methods of review to real-world projects in both the US and the UK. By steeping yourself in different review systems, you will gain an understanding of comparative best practices, challenges, and opportunities related to performing this kind of work. Working all over the world, environmental professionals must review large-scale housing, infrastructure, and renewables projects, and this course will help ground you in diverse perspectives of practice beyond those found in the US.

This Urban Studies colloquium (XX) will explore the topic of Contested Urban Futures. We will examine the concept of contested urban futures through a study of the growing challenges facing cities in the near and medium term. Growing political conflicts, social and cultural tensions, economic fractures, and environmental debates are all occurring at a critical time for cities as we adapt and evolve cities to meet new and changing needs of all residents in the 21st-century city. While we will look directly at contestation, the true outcome of the class will be finding opportunity spaces within this contestation to reshape the city to fully engage residents, create vibrancy, and work towards economic, social, and environmental sustainability and resiliency.
