This course will introduce students to South-European traditional expressive cultures from a historical and ethnographic methodological angle. We will be studying instrumental and vocal musical traditions along the Mediterranean shore from the Iberian Peninsula to Greece, including disport Sephardic and pertaining to primarily oral repertoires. The course will thus provide students with a much needed understanding of the 'other' musics of the Southern European continent that complement and provide sonic resources for 'the classical' repertoires of the written tradition.

The course is a seminar about the gestural perspectives of musical performance. We shall first introduce the general theory of musical gestures as described in Mazzola's book, "The Topos of Music vol. III: Gestures." We shall then apply this theory to investigate the gestural character of music performance, also after having studied the essentials of performance from Mazzola's "Performance Theory" book. Applying this knowledge, the students will investigate their own instruments when the perform. In particular, we will apply Mazzola's theory of vocal performance as a tripartite structure consisting of external, middle, and internal gesture, following Johann Sundberg's theory of partials in singing.
