- Class Notes:
- This graduate seminar surveys the transdisciplinary field of feminist media studies. The course introduces gender theory and intersectional feminist critique, with a focus on how this work informs media and cultural studies. We approach the power dynamics of gender alongside the power dynamics of race, class, sexuality, geopolitics and other social experiences, and consider media culture's role in reproducing inequalities, constituting norms, regulating and disciplining individuals and populations, commodifying difference and critique, and (potentially) enabling resistance, oppositional practices and cultural activism. The aims of the seminar are to: 1) trace feminist contributions to power analysis; 2) introduce major theories and methods of media analysis and critique; 3) provide a supportive forum for learning, discussion and debate; and 4) prepare class participants to conduct critical scholarship and teach courses in gender studies, media and cultural studies, feminist criticism, digital media and related fields.
