Class Notes:
This course studies improvisation as relational praxis, and social performance as relational improvisation. We begin from an analytic focus on bodies in action (proxemics, gesture, prosody, etc.) and proceed to a consideration of ways in which performances model unity, dissent, dialogue, anarchy, silencing, speaking on behalf of the voiceless, and various kinds of spontaneous harmony or dissonance. Throughout the course, we will experiment together with various kinds of performed socialities: experimenting with settings for music and dance (stage, mahfil, ritual, etc.), working with classic event scores, and composing our own. Objectives and content: This course helps to fulfill the need for upper-level ethnomusicology courses in the division of Global Creative Studies. Evaluation of Student Acheivement: Final performance, writing projects, daily writings prereq: Musicology or theory emphasis or instr consent
