- Episodes from the sixteenth-century chivalric epics by Ariosto (Orlando furioso) and Tasso (Gerusalemme liberata) provided librettists with source material well into the eighteenth century. Both works supplied tales of combat, alliances, and treachery, as well as thwarted and reciprocated love, episodes that unfold against the backdrop of historical battles pitting Christians against Muslims, individuals are often rendered as outsiders due to their geographical location, region, and gender. We'll explore what happens when these literary characters become musical ones, looking at works performed in Italy, France, England, and Austria. We'll investigate the degrees to which characters' Otherness travels with them, and we'll contextualize the works within the period's ongoing conflict between Europe and the Ottoman Empire.
