Title: Italian Film in a Global Perspective: Neorealism/Nouvelle Vague/World Cinemas. Description: Traditionally, neorealism is approached and taught as Italy's most native cinematic style. From Bazin onwards, neorealism has been described as Italy's glorious redemption from its guilty past, the collective attempt to rebuild the nation from the ruins of Fascism. While this approach has led many scholars to investigate the role that neorealism had in Italy's national history, what has long gone unnoticed is neorealism's transnational dimension. Drawing from recent scholarship on neorealism (see for instance the edited volumes: Reviewing Fascism; Italian Neorealism and Global Cinema; Global Neorealism: The Transnational History of a Film Style) and more broadly from the "global turn" in cultural studies that Stuart Hall heralded in the early 1990s, this course will tackle neorealism as an intrinsically transnational phenomenon. The ultimate goal of this class is to locate Italian neorealism within wider European and global networks, while familiarizing students with the key terms, concepts, and techniques of film analysis.
