- This course will focus on the people side of business. We will look at how, through managing and leading people, we can create an engaged, productive workforce in order to achieve organizational strategic objectives. The content of this course is complementary to any major or minor. Major topics in this course: - Managing people in an ethical, legal way that is aligned with corporate strategy and helps organizations reach their goals; - Successfully attracting, recruiting, and selecting talented people; - Creating interesting, engaging jobs and giving meaningful feedback in order to retain great employees; - Rewarding and motivating people through intrinsic and extrinsic methods to encourage the most effective and "right" kind of employee behaviors to create an engaged, productive workforce through people strategies and practices.
- Class Notes:
- Remote: All instruction will be fully online with set meeting patterns. Students must be online at the scheduled days and times. In addition, instructors may provide supplemental content that students can engage with any time or within a certain time frame. The instructors might be available for limited in-person interactions. However, in-person interactions will be optional if available. Students will have a very similar experience whether on campus or off campus.
- Class Description:
- This course is intended to provide an overview of selected critical topics in human resources management and to deal with their relationships to other aspects of business management. The course emphasizes external and internal environments, acquiring and developing human resources, work and job design, performance management, global implications for HR leaders, evaluating, and compensating human resources, including union environments. Students will leave this course with a broad understanding of how and why various HR practices are used and their impact on the business, from the attraction and development of talent through labor relations and global implications. Course reading requirements and activities are approximate and are subject to change.
