This course utilizes the frame of 'controversy' to explore the burgeoning claims advanced by advocates that artificial intelligence (AI), nature, and non-human animals should be afforded legal status, akin to the rights and duties currently held by natural persons. Students will learn and apply concepts from discursive ethics, public argumentation, public and counterpublic theories, the analysis of social movements, and the traditional rhetorical canon to this controversy.
