- Class Description:
- In this course, we will explore aspects of Parisian culture, history, identity, and language through the lens of Paris métro stations and their surrounding neighborhoods. Questions framing the course include: How do we define Paris and Parisians? How do Paris neighborhoods reflect linguistic and cultural diversity? Why is the métro essential to understanding Paris? Using a variety of document types (literature, film, images, mass media, social media, music, etc.), we will critically examine topics such as stereotypes, identity, gentrification, immigration, and history.
- Learning Objectives:
- Orally and in writing, students will be able to:
1. explain and analyze the cultural diversity of Parisian neighborhoods;
2. discuss the importance of the métro daily life and the city's identity;
3. identify and evaluate various perspectives on Paris and its inhabitants; and
4. relate course content to their own experiences and cultural perspectives.
