- **This course will be PRIMARILY ASYNCHRONOUS with a few required synchronous sessions.** Course Description: Can genocide be stopped? What enables a person to torture another? Despite nations worldwide signing in 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after WWII & the Holocaust, genocide, torture, slavery, economic destitution, climate change, & mass displacement persist. Is it possible to reduce or bring an end to these gross violations of human rights? This course will explore strategies to address current-day human rights challenges by focusing on six major global human rights challenges: genocide, torture, slavery, economic destitution, climate change, & mass displacement. In the process of conceptualizing practical strategies, students examine the complex social forces that impede human rights. We explore (state) policy-focused, (judicial) law-focused, & activist-focused strategies. Questions asked include "Why do nations obey human rights, yet in other instances, they flagrantly defy them?" Even as human rights violations continue, social movements & activist action have achieved major human rights victories. We examine the role of activism as a strategy to achieve human rights, & explore how social change can occur in difficult global circumstances. The history of human rights is replete with inspiring triumphant moments when individuals, organizations, & movements sought to advance dignity, and in turn, transformed the world - changing societies and redefining culture. Individuals have changed their lives as part of their commitment to justice and individually become part of a human rights strategy. Organizations have been formed in the struggle for justice, becoming important loci for strategic thinking. Through our encounter with strategy, we come face to face with the vulnerability, sacrifice, & courage of human beings.
