This course studies improvisation as relational praxis, and social performance as relational improvisation. We begin from an analytic focus on bodies in action (proxemics, gesture, prosody, etc.) and proceed to a consideration of ways in which performances model unity, dissent, dialogue, anarchy, silencing, speaking on behalf of the voiceless, and various kinds of spontaneous harmony or dissonance. Throughout the course, we will experiment together with various kinds of performed socialities: experimenting with settings for music and dance (stage, mahfil, ritual, etc.), working with classic event scores, and composing our own. Objectives and content: This course helps to fulfill the need for upper-level ethnomusicology courses in the division of Global Creative Studies. Evaluation of Student Acheivement: Final performance, writing projects, daily writings prereq: Musicology or theory emphasis or instr consent

Episodes from the sixteenth-century chivalric epics by Ariosto (Orlando furioso) and Tasso (Gerusalemme liberata) provided librettists with source material well into the eighteenth century. Both works supplied tales of combat, alliances, and treachery, as well as thwarted and reciprocated love, episodes that unfold against the backdrop of historical battles pitting Christians against Muslims, individuals are often rendered as outsiders due to their geographical location, region, and gender. We'll explore what happens when these literary characters become musical ones, looking at works performed in Italy, France, England, and Austria. We'll investigate the degrees to which characters' Otherness travels with them, and we'll contextualize the works within the period's ongoing conflict between Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

Class Description:
In this course we will embark on a multidisciplinary analysis and interpretation of the early fourteenth-century "Roman de Fauvel" (Paris, BNF f.fr.146). An examination of the historical and socio-cultural context that led to the composition of the Roman and the production of the manuscript will go hand in hand with an in-depth consideration of the complex visual, poetic, and musical intertextuallity manifest in this Parisian cultural artifact. Furthermore, we will explore issues pertaining to the attribution, notation, and transmission of the polyphonic and monophonic interpolations, as well as the larger question of medieval textual and musical performance.
