Class Notes:
This course will introduce students to communication research methods, applications, and issues. The purpose of this class is to show students how to think about research, how to understand its purposes, and how it is used in our social worlds. By the end of the class, you will better understand how research is conducted, how research results are used, and how to interrogate if those results are sound. This course includes a survey of research methods and research design issues relevant to the critical consumption and understanding of communication research. As a starting point, we focus on the ways we know and the assumptions we make about the nature of knowledge and science. We then focus on how research is actually conducted, including methodological and ethical considerations for exploring research questions and testing hypotheses. We then take time to explore various analytical techniques and frame the results of research in context to larger societal concerns.

Class Notes:
The American Presidency is the most visible and powerful communication apparatus within the federal government, and the opportunity to control this apparatus consumers individual candidates, political parties, and myriad interest groups. When the president speaks, the nation watches and listens. The presidential campaign season consumes eighteen months of media attention every four years while presidential inaugurals, announcements, press conferences, and impeachment trials are covered by national news media and viewed by millions of citizens. Tens of millions tune in for presidential debates, and even more when the president speaks after a national tragedy. The rhetorical analysis of presidential (and candidate) rhetoric contributes significantly to the study of the office, inspiring entire books carefully analyzing presidential and campaign rhetoric. The study of presidential rhetoric is particularly salient in what promises to be a highly significant and contentious election cycle, where a rematch between Joe Biden and Donald Trump affords myriad opportunities to assess the central power of the office of American President and engage in historical and comparative study of presidential address. Because presidential communications are recorded and archived, access to this wealth of discursive data provides an opportunity to understand the tools and techniques rhetoric offers to the discipline. Understanding presidential rhetoric contributes directly to civic engagement and awareness. Public policy and media discourse in American society is influenced strongly by the agenda and speeches of the president and presidential candidates. How can citizens become better informed about the nuanced and practiced conventions and expectations facing the presidency? Rhetoric provides one method of analysis for understanding how the peculiar nature of the presidency and presidential campaigns shapes and influences all aspects of American culture. It is undeniable that we have entered a new era of remote work. Companies today know that hybrid and remote work is the key to employee satisfaction and productivity. Recent studies show that more than a third of employees feel so strongly about hybrid/remote work that they would quit on the spot if the ability to work remotely was taken away. To make sure that both remote workers and their employers benefit from remote/hybrid work situations, it is important for both groups to understand the concept of remote teams and best practices for collaborating remotely. We will explore concepts such as building team trust, using the right collaboration tools, ensuring effective communication, setting clear expectations, giving effective feedback, and making sure virtual teams feel supported.

Class Notes:
This course examines the relationship between media and cultural memory in the digitalized era. We study how memory institutions such as museums and archives use different types of media to engage with the past and to reach out to publics. We also learn how artists, activists, and other civil society actors intervene in cultural memory politics. Social media and new technologies contribute to the transformation of how public memory is created and by whom. Participatory culture and mediated circulation shape cultural memory in significant ways. Students will learn key concepts and literature on cultural memory from media and communication studies perspectives. We will apply theoretical ideas to examine the meanings of objects, artifacts, iconic images, art, vernacular and official memorials, rituals, and exhibitions. The course is founded on sociology of temporality: The present, one day, will be the past, and awareness of this often shapes people's action. Also, the past haunts the present and shapes how events and people are treated in the present social life. While the course addresses theories of cultural memory more broadly, empirical cases focus on social justice issues and marginalized groups such as migrants. Public memory recognizes the social importance of those who are remembered or memorialized. During the course students will explore migration museums in the Twin Cities and vernacular sites such as the George Floyd memorial to examine how cultural memory is being made through mediation.

The confrontation between the United States and Russia over Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the marked increase in trade and security friction between the United States and China have led many commentators to declare that the world is entering a new era of Great Power competition. This course deploys debate and argumentation theory to analyze both how different interest groups and proponents of various schools of international relations theory construct and defend arguments about the nature of the emerging international order and how the foreign policy of the United States should adjust to this order. Students will both critically analyze critical texts in this emerging controversy and debate and discuss the merits of these arguments.

Class Description:

When someone communicates, they want to be believed. This course will explore the complexities of credibility (or "ethos") in a wide variety of contexts, covering many specific topics that factor into credibility: authority; neutrality and bias; expertise; the nature of scientific evidence; linguistic factors (such as accents, speech rate, and powerless speech patterns); nonverbal factors (dress and uniforms, facial features, eye-blinks); reputations; leadership and charisma; media credibility; anonymity; and particular message types including boasts, excuses, apologies, threats and reassurances. We will look at credibility in business contexts, politics, the courtroom, interpersonal relationships, science and medicine.

Grading:
A large percentage of the grade will be based on participation, so be prepared to speak up!
Class Format:

Assignments will include:

  • Posting journals in reaction to the readings

  • A paper analyzing the credibility of a public figure who epitomizes some credibility-related issue (such as the charisma of a political or business leader; an athlete or politicians who has made an apology; a scientist or doctor who makes controversial claims; a whistleblower; or a prisoner with a following). This project may be done individually, in pairs, or perhaps in groups of three.

  • Students will present a preview of an upcoming reading, and pose discussion questions for the next class

  • A research paper analyzing a credibility-related topic in depth, followed by an oral presentation

Workload:

The class will not be taught as a "top-down" lecture style course in which the teacher bestows knowledge (based on his/her own credibility); rather, it will be a discussion-oriented class in which all participants explore the subject in depth. There will be no tests, and no Powerpoint slides. Instead, students will read scholarly articles, write reflection journals, and discuss in class.

Sports & Media
Class Description:
The goals of this course are: 1) To think critically about the role that sports play in reinforcing, and sometimes challenging, social and cultural norms 2) To examine the close relationship between sports and the media and 3) to look at the intersection of sports and topics such as race, gender, sexuality, globalisation and national identity. Some of the key questions we will try to answer are: ? Are sports ?more than a game?? ? Do sports help shape our worldview? ? What does it mean to be a sports fan? ? How have new media technological developments changed how we watch and experience sports? This course will draw on scholarly work in order to examine the important cultural, social and political role that sports play in contemporary society. Students will study and learn to apply several analytical approaches to sports in order to critically assess the role that sports play in both popular culture and the media.

Rhetoric of Law
Class Description:
Rhetoric of Law The image of Justice as a blind-folded woman holding scales and a double-edged sword is ubiquitous: it appears everywhere from courthouses to cartoons. How does this figure function rhetorically and what relation does it have to legal discourse and practice? We often hear about law doing justice, but how is justice shown, seen, and understood? And what happens if we imagine justice as neither blind nor balanced? To address such questions, this course explores the enduring relationship between rhetoric and law. Drawing upon literature, film, architecture, and legal and rhetorical theory, we will analyze the many connections among public representations of justice, aspirations of democracy, and state practices of legal judgment. We will also study the function, claim, and content of law and the fundamental role of rhetoric in legal argumentation. Readings include primary texts on rhetoric, legal scholarship, and works by theorists you may have read (or read about) in other Rhetoric courses: Austin, Bentham, Foucault, and Rawls. Assignments include analytical essays, exams, and a class presentation.
