- Class Description:
- Screening the Modern Italian Family will further develop students' speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as broaden their cultural awareness. The course focuses on the modern Italian family, as depicted in literature, films and other media from the 1960s through present day. Films will include: Divorzio all'Italiana, Buongiorno notte, L'ultimo bacio, and Le fate ignoranti. The class examines the traditional concept of family in Italy while expanding on the political, consumerist, criminal, and queer family models. The class also considers the Italian-American family as depicted in the television series The Sopranos. Students will leave the course with an understanding of the many connotations of the idea of family and its role in Italian society. This course will focus largely on Italian culture. Students will still be evaluated on their grammar in tests, presentations and writing assignments, and are advised to continue studying grammar outside of class. Students in need of further help are encouraged to visit office hours.
