- Students will read in translation two of Italy's foundational modern novels. The first by Manzoni, The Promessi Sposi (1843), and the second Moravia's 20th-century novel, The Indifferent ones. In this course, we will explore the importance of these two works for Italian culture and think about how the figure of the anti-hero develops. Our discussion-based seminar will allow students to practice close readings of the materials and discuss in detail stylistic differences as well as the content. Students can also participate in weekly written posts on the readings. Some films will be added to supplement the course.
