- Civil War, Revolution, and constitutional settlement. Industrialization and growth of democracy. Rise/decline of British Empire.
- Class Notes:
- Class Description:
We will start our study of British history with the seventeenth century, a dramatic era marked by Civil War and the execution of King Charles I. Following these constitutional struggles, Britain then entered into the tumultuous period marked by the Industrial Revolution and expansion of the British Empire during the eighteenth and nineteenth century. While these centuries were periods of great progress and prosperity, they also brought new conflicts, particularly with Ireland, and unprecedented social problems. The twentieth century marked a period of further upheavals and paradoxes in Britain with the experience of two World Wars, conflict with Ireland, and the decline of the empire. Throughout the course, we will trace how the complex interplay of forces over the past four centuries shaped contemporary Britain. We will explore key questions and debates in Modern British History, including: How did this "island nation" become a preeminent world power? Why did Britain turn out so differently than the United States, given their common constitutional roots? What are the origins of the Welfare State? How did British art and literature both reflect and influence these periods of change? What were the causes of The Great Famine in Ireland, and how did it shape Britain's relationship with Ireland and the Irish independence movement? How was World War I a watershed in British society? What motivated postwar migration to Britain, and how does this shape Britain today?
There are no assigned textbooks for the class. The class readings consist of articles and book chapters that introduce students to key works of scholarship as well as primary texts, including memoirs and diaries, speeches, and political and philosophical tracts. Assignments include quizzes, a short paper based on a novel, and a final research paper. The research project is designed to give students the opportunity to undertake primary and secondary research in an area of British history that interests them.
This course meets the LE requirement in Global Perspectives and the LE requirement in Historical Perspectives.- Textbooks:

- Class Description:
- This course examines a series of complex and interconnected issues of modernity relevant for understanding 20th century Latin America. Using films, texts, lectures, and discussions, we will focus on four overlapping themes: popular revolutions, authoritarianism and human rights, urbanization, and border crossings. We will view films made in Hollywood as well as films made in (and largely for) Latin America, and attempt to understand the ways in which these films depict, explain, interpret, and define notions of modernity within an historical framework. This is not a course in film theory, and while discussions will normally deal with representation and meaning of films, we will not focus on theoretical issues related to the semiotics of film.

- Class Description:
- This course explores the period between Reconstruction and the meaning of black freedom after the Civil War to contemporary issues such as reparations and racial profiling. Afro 3865 begins by examining how the Civil War culminated in the liberation of four million slaves and the attempt by constitutional amendments to right the wrongs of the previous period of enslavement.Though constitutionally free, Reconstruction ended in failure, stripping African-Americans of their newfound citizenship and ushering in the period of Jim-Crow segregation. The course will detail black life under Jim Crow, but highlight African-American agency in the the realm of politics, labor, sports, music, and intellectual life. The course turns a crucial corner during the New Deal period and discusses how the 1930s and early 1940s set the stage for the modern civil rights struggle. With the Supreme Court's decree directly challenging Jim Crow in 1954, African-Americans entered a new phase in their history where protesting for black rights became a defining feature in American culture during the 1960s and 1970s.New leaders and organizations emerged along with novel cultural forms and expressions. The course ends in the contemporary period. What are we to make of the modern day black struggle around race, class, and gender? How are we to interpret the demand for reparations in the age of dismantling affirmative action? What about heightened incidences of police brutality? How do they all connect to the past?
