Class Description:
This course covers the sweep of history in its broadest sense, from the origins of the human species and the emergence of the first complex societies to the dawn of the modern world. Organized around the theme of "Technology vs. the Environment," it explores how, throughout history, humans have developed technologies to cope with the specific environmental conditions in which they live, and how these technologies have in turn created new environmental conditions, demanding further adaptation. Within this frame, topics to be addressed include trade, religion, the spread of ideas, the development of the world's great civilizations, and their mutual interaction over time.

The course is open to all students, majors and non-majors, and has no prerequisites. It fulfills the WI and two CLE requirements.
