Class Description:
The seminar will explore the portrayal of superheroes in comics, films, and TV, asking how these media function to explore and unsettle cultural norms of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, citizenship and belonging, and (dis)abilities and (super)powers. What does it mean to view these central aspects of human experience through the fictional exploits of characters who push the boundaries of the recognizably human? What do their fictional worlds, including their powers and vulnerabilities, tell us about our own worlds? What makes their stories compelling and engaging? Why do superheroes matter to us, and how are we (differently) invested in how they are portrayed and treated? Seminar participants will be urged to bring their own particular interests to our discussions and their writing.
