Proseminar. Selected issues in global studies. Topics specified in Class Schedule.
Class Notes:
In this course, students will develop policy alternatives to parental incarceration in collaboration with community partners and will organize a symposium in May 2025 where these alternatives will be presented to local decision-makers. In the United States, as well as in many other countries, children are largely invisible when courts determine whether their parents will be incarcerated. This two-semester seminar will apply an international human rights lens to the issue of parental incarceration and will examine U.S. and international laws, policies, and programs that promote the best interests of children whose parents face pretrial detention or incarceration. The course will meet weekly with a monthly workshop featuring legal professionals, policymakers, academic experts, and community members who have been impacted by mass incarceration. Together, students and these community partners will evaluate policies that consider the best interests of children when their parents are involved in the criminal legal system and will promote programs that expand community-based alternatives to parental incarceration.
