Class Description:

Herzlich Willkommen! German 1004 emphasizes building language skills so that you can use German confidently and accurately in a variety of situations. In this course you will discuss major themes such as personal and professional identities, modern German history, current events and film. You will also practice talking about your own studies, goals, and plans, and expressing your opinions and ideas. You will read the graphic novel drüben! and discuss this view of life in the former German Democratic Republic. You will participate regularly in discussions, group work and interpreting video clips and texts. Writing and revising essays and doing a career readiness presentation give you a chance to practice your writing and speaking skills in structured contexts.


Grading:
Chapter assessments 16%; writing assignments 24%; reading and listening activities 17%; career readiness and collaborative dialogues 12%; participation and online activities 21%; final exam 10%
Exam Format:
The exams test vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, and writing.
Class Format:
This course is conducted in German; you will speak with your classmates, read texts, watch videos, and actively work to improve your language skills.
