- Course Description This course examines cultural debates about memory in Latin America and underscores different aesthetics associated with preserving memories linked to genocide and human rights violations. We will examine various audiovisual approaches to memory, encompassing the intimate, familial, collective, and public dimensions. We will also study the use of testimonial/documentary practices (understood in a very broad and hybrid sense) in literature, photography, and other artistic and archival expressions. This exploration will encompass diverse approaches to memory, delving into theories that place the human and the non-human at the forefront of these struggles. Our focus extends to intersectional approaches to memory and the reconstruction of community fabrics, along with the examination of emerging memory struggles that redefine representation in both human and non-human terms.
