- Topic: Memoir and Memorials: The Holocaust in Personal and Public Memory. Description: This seminar examines the ways in which the memory of the Holocaust continues to shape the public sphere in Germany. We will explore the debates about memorialization and museums, with particular emphasis on the legacies and multidirectional layers of historical violence in the debates about memory. Paying close attention to the history of colonialism and to the politics of migration in Germany, we will explore a way to think about historical violence through a transnational lens that moves past dichotomies of victim/perpetrator and instead enables us to understand how citizens are implicated in structures of power and violence. Readings and assignments will include memorial sites, memoirs, films, and public debates about the Holocaust.
