Class Notes:
No one denies that friendship is part of a flourishing human life - who would want to live a life without friends? But there is no consensus about why or in what way this is true. In part, the problem is controversy about the nature of flourishing or well-being and, in part, it's that philosophical conversations about friendship have gone on largely independently of the well-being literature. This course will introduce graduate students to the philosophical literature on well-being and explore the relationship between well-being and friendship. The introduction to well-being will also include some attention to the theories that inform psychological research. The discussion of friendship will focus on the value of friendship and will be open to input about which specific authors and topics we cover. (For example, if there's interest, we may discuss relationships with artificial intelligence). The course does not presume any background in these topics, though graduate work in philosophy or well-being in other fields will be helpful. Course requirements include active seminar participation, leading one or two discussions, and either one seminar paper (on the model of an article suitable for submission to a journal) or two shorter term papers.
Class Description:
Practical Wisdom Practical wisdom is an important virtue that has received little philosophical attention in recent years. The course will explore relevant literature in virtue ethics, meta-ethics, virtue epistemology and moral psychology.
