- This course will investigate the historical and theoretical study of musical meaning, particularly the semantic and syntactic units perceptible within the sonorous surface of music. The course begins with early humanist and Enlightenment-era efforts to decode rhetorical and narrative meaning in musical forms, and then it shifts to a focus on developments in music analysis and theory within the last thirty years. Various sub disciplines are explored, including topic theory, semiotics, critical theory, "critical musicology," popular music studies, sound studies, genre theory, and more. Repertoire begins with 18th-19th Western art music but then broadens to include popular musics and beyond. prereq: Completion of graduate tonal theory remediation (MUS 3508/3518) or equivalent
