- Class Description:
- This course will examine the history of the world from approximately 1700-1918. The course exams three major themes of the period: the appearance and spread of capitalism, the dynamics of imperialism, and political revolutions. Emphasis will be placed on reading and interpreting historiographical texts and source materials. The course is designed to meet the needs of history majors and non-majors alike. In addition to introducing students to the basics of how historians write history, we will teach students basic analytic skills. In discussion section, there will be serious emphasis on the development of writing skills. You will write four short papers in class. The instructor and TAs will guide you in the development of good note-taking skills (from reading and lecture). These will be the basis for your writing. The in-class essays are opportunities for you to explore the complex history of globalization...focusing especially on processes and making sense of them. We will use chimein (a university web-based tool for fostering discussion) to help prepare for the essays.
