- History/theory of 'close reading' (i.e., the most intense encounter between reader and text) exemplified through critical texts. Students perform close readings of various texts.
- Class Notes:
- This semester's iteration of the course moves across media to explore how we can practice and theorize reading not just words, but images and sounds. As such we'll work through examples of fiction, poetry, the essay, song, recorded speeches, film sequences, music video, and painting. Midterm and final papers may focus on any of the above or, in consultation with the instructor, another medium/genre. Emphasis will be on writers/makers from the Global South, women, and writers/makers of color. This course assumes no prior experience analyzing music, images, or moving media, but it will ask you to look and listen carefully. All readings/viewing in English or English translation.
