- Class Notes:
- The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the phylogenetic factors that influence/shape/contextualize brain and psychological development during infancy and toddlerhood. We will focus specifically on evolutionary theory, cultural ecology, the social brain hypothesis (or the Machiavellian Intelligence hypothesis), structural and functional brain development in early life, and factors (both intrinsic and extrinsic) that influence ontogenetic brain development. The course includes an overview of the following topics: • Evolutionary theory • The problem of recapitulation theory (and thoughtful reconsideration) • "Instinct" - proponents and opponents • Developmental psychobiology - some precursors to DCN • The Social Brain Hypothesis and adjacent work • Cultural ecology in nonhuman and human primates • Infant/Toddler Brain Development
