Class Notes:
Drawing for Comics builds foundational drawing skills for students who want to work to better their abilities using both manual and digital techniques through the lens of an independent comics artist. Students will learn figure drawing and perspective, line quality, tonal values, creating space and formal strategies for engaging compositions, the basics of any beginning drawing class. In addition, this class will focus on how to create dynamic panels and sequences. Students will learn to balance image and text to create imaginative narratives. Students will read seminal comics in order to develop a variety of comic strategies. This course will also build the techniques that comics artists use to turn physical drawings into digital formats, including scanning and scaling works for both printed and digital outputs. Some introduction to Procreate/PhotoShop will be covered. The context for this course is based in the recent history of independent comics and graphic novels as well the greater community of makers and events around independent comics and publishing. Students are encouraged to bring their own stories and research to the class in order to create original work in the context of our greater society. The class will focus on outsider narratives, building empathy, equity and justice through text and image as well as understanding metaphor and imagination in world building, first person narratives, and greater political stories. After building basic drawing skills, students will be asked to make original works and develop their own characters. Revising, experimenting, and exercises to expand your work will be emphasized. Students should come to this class with an open mind and desire to create imaginative work with the goal of building basic drawing skills with an emphasis on a comics-focused approach.
