Seminar examines particular aspects of method and/or theory. Topics vary according to student and faculty interests.
Class Notes:
On Violence: Context, Genre, Form What is violence and how do we know it? Where does it begin and end, and who gets to decide? What exceeds violence, and what does violence exceed? If violence takes on a set of shifting definitions - sometimes as the force that ends life, and at other times the very means through which life unfolds - then what gets identified as violence also yields the terrain for safe passage out. If violence is objectification (reduction), then it also contains the generative possibility of subjectification (formation). In this course, we will explore the paradoxes and vicissitudes of violence across a variety of contexts, genres, and forms. We will engage with a range of approaches - ontological, phenomenological, metaphysical, psychoanalytic, historical, political, poetic, and literary - in order to interrogate the vastness of violence, exploring both its possibilities and impossibilities for making and unmaking our world.
