- Class Notes:
- This course focuses on prison uprisings and prison writings across the globe since 1960s. From Evin Prison in Iran to Armagh Women's Prison in Northern Ireland to Soledad Prison in the United States to Diyarbakir Prison in Northern Kurdistan, it asks what forms the anti-imperialist leftist, anti-colonial nationalist, and feminist political movements have assumed in prison. It examines the prison writings of political figures like Assata Shakur, Abdullah Ocalan, and Jaiprakash Narayan to explore the relation of political thought to political practice in prison. Through prison ethnographies, prisoner autobiographies, and prison documentaries, this course invite students to rethink the relationship between prison, crime, power, and revolution.
