Course Catalog Description:: This course provides an introduction to the various musics associated with the label "minimalism," including musical trajectories emerging from them. Numerous artists and compositions will be covered, spanning from 1958 to the present, though the focus is on music composed during the 1960s and 1970s, including that by Young, Riley, Reich, Glass, Monk, the Velvet Underground, Andriessen, P�rt, Eno, Feldman, and others. The class blends analysis, historical and analytical secondary readings, and in-class performance. Students must contribute informed comments to discussion, which in turn requires the completion of reading and listening assignments. prereq: Undergraduates-Mus 4504/4514 or equivalent; Graduates-Music 3508/3518 or passing of the Theory Entrance Exam
