TOPIC: "Conversion and Identity: Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages" Description: This seminar will examine processes connected with the concept of "conversion" across Afroeurasia in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In recent decades, the notion of religious conversion as a single transformative act has come to be challenged as historically and socially constructed; conversion is more often considered within a broader framework of social and political transition. In this seminar we will study the multiplicity and mutability of religious identities along a continuum of change. We will engage with some major issues in premodern history including christianization and the spread of Islam; language and ethnic identity; kingdoms and communities; and the archaeology of religious identities. Although we will focus on the spread of Christianity, we will also consider mission and conversion in Judaism and Islam. The seminar will entail substantive weekly readings and discussion, usually led by students. The last few weeks of class will focus on case studies based on students' particular interests. The seminar is intended for graduate students but is open to advanced undergraduates with permission of the instructor. Students will be expected to use foreign language sources when appropriate.
