Course Catalog Description:: This course examines the history of the U.S. between the War of 1812 and the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. We will examine the dramatic expansion in population and territory; violent growth of slavery; onset of transportation, communications, and industrial revolutions; forced removal of Native Americans; movements for social reform; transformations in popular culture, family life, and religious experience; maturation of political parties; and the coming of the Civil War.
