- Title: Francophone Feminisms and Praxis. Description: Feminism - the range of movements, philosophies, theories and practices aiming to redefine the relationship among gender, sexuality and power in society - has played a role in French-speaking (or Francophone) culture for centuries, and so has a distinct history and particular ideological, social, and cultural dimensions. We will explore three major aspects of feminist thought in the French-speaking world: 1) The specific history of feminist thought (14th-21stcenturies) and its intersections with political, social and economic structures (monarchy, religion, colonialism, capitalism); 2) French-language feminist philosophies and theories (such as existentialism, language, post-structuralism, art and aesthetics); 3) The particular question of Francophone feminist praxis, including literature and arts, as it pertains to social change. We will also cover tensions, borrowings, and differences between Anglophone and French-language feminist thought. Readings drawn from such authors as Pisan, Poullain de la Barre, Gouges, Beauvoir, Irigaray, Foucault, Wittig, Gay, Hirata, Delphy, Serano, LeDÅ"uff, feminist collectives. Contract grading. Please contact the professor if you'd like more information. This course will be offered in English, with French reading knowledge strongly suggested.
