http://classinfo.umn.edu/?FREN3350+Fall2023 Title: Women's Labor: Wage, Domestic, & Childbirth Work in Nineteenth-Century France. Description: In this course, we will examine the roles assigned to and improvised by women in nineteenth-century France, with a particular focus on childbirth as a form of labor, compared with the wage and domestic labor they were obligated to fulfill. Among the questions that will animate our discussions is how did these various forms of labor put women into precarious and problematic relations with state, religious, and medical institutions? Thus, we will analyze the complexities of these relations between women and the institutions through the depictions of women's labor in the novels of Stendhal, Flaubert, and Zola, alongside journals and manuals by midwives, feminist criticism, and philosophical texts. These texts are selected to allow us to reflect critically and imaginatively through close readings of how gender, class, (dis)ability and the intersectionality of these identities might have contributed to the entanglements. For example, we will look at how childbirth placed - and continues to place - the woman in labor at the center of social, ideological, and political debates in the French modern era. Also, we will consider how women's participation in the medical labor force was disrupted, removing midwives from the birthing room.
