Course Catalog Description:: Identity politics in contemporary art. Theories of performance/performativity. Nationalism/sexuality in art since 1980s. Discourses of death in postmodernism. Body at turn of 21st century. prereq: instr consent
Class Notes:: What happens to the aesthetic philosophy, ubiquitous in the last century or more, that cutting edge art should subvert, overthrow, upend, and disorient its viewers, in an era when, as theorist Sara Ahmed says, "disorientation is what's given"? This course studies recent scholarship from a variety of disciplines including art history, visual studies, literature, philosophy, geography, as well as feminist, indigenous, and African American studies that both decries and exults in disorientation, particularly as it relates to climate crisis. We track the development, from the late 1960s to the present, of artists' disorienting efforts and their increasing awareness of environmental disaster to understand the nature of art today. Readings will include work by Sara Ahmed, Amitav Ghosh, Donna Haraway, Sarah Jane Cervenak, Timothy Morton, Kathryn Yusoff, Amanda Boetzkes, Santiago Zabala, and Patricia Marroquin Norby.
