- Class Notes:
- Today's global cities like Paris, Venice and London present fascinating examples of architecture and urbanism suspended between influences of tradition and innovation. As global centers, they offer highly compact areas dense with built examples of historically significant as well as innovative contemporary buildings that demonstrate best practices in theoretical, cultural, technological, and material matters. In this field study students will have the opportunity to visit projects and document the unique characteristics of their design and construction. We will address questions such as: What constitutes material identity? How do architects resurrect traditional buildings? What ecological issues are addressed via the building envelope? What means do architects employ to apply new material technologies effectively in architecture? How are conflicts resolved between differing approaches in building construction when global firms practice in a local environment? What repeatable, scalable processes are evident? Participants will conduct in-depth analysis and generate critical design proposals. These activities will occur within the context of a multi-site tour in which students will be exposed to newly constructed buildings and urban environments - as well as iconic historic structures. Available to graduate students only. Students will develop skills to communicate more effectively through a variety of exercises in graphical, textual, and verbal methods. They will produce a field study notebook of analytical and expressive drawings, develop a written personal statement summarizing their experiences, and meet with practitioners to engage in dialogues and present their work.
