- Films from Portuguese-speaking world in their historical, (geo)political, and socioeconomic contexts. Films from Brazil, Portugal, or Lusophone Africa analyzed under interdisciplinary framework, noting aspects related to cinematography/rhetoric. prereq: 3003 or instr consent or dept consent
- Class Notes:
- This course focuses on Brazilian documentary film from the 1960s to present. Students will learn how to analyze the aesthetic components of films, considering the connections among the aural, visual, and narrative content. Students will also discuss the thematic components of the films and the various forms of spoken Portuguese heard within the documentaries. We will watch Brazilian documentaries from various regions related to various topics. Recurring themes include: inequality, abuse of power, national politics, migration, the environment, and labor politics. Some of the issues that will be discussed include: the presence of the director within the film, the use of interviews, experimental aspects, the power dynamics among the film crew and the subjects being filmed, and tactics for involving the audience emotionally. This is a cross-listed course, and students taking the course at the 3000 level will have a final take-home exam, and students taking the course at the 5000 level will write a final paper. The course will be taught in Portuguese, and all of the reading, writing, and speaking will be done in Portuguese.
