Students will also discuss the thematic components of the films and the various forms of spoken Portuguese heard within the documentaries. We will watch Brazilian documentaries from various regions related to various topics. Recurring themes include: inequality, abuse of power, national politics, migration, the environment, and labor politics. Some of the issues that will be discussed include: the presence of the director within the film, the use of interviews, experimental aspects, the power dynamics among the film crew and the subjects being filmed, and tactics for involving the audience emotionally.
