Course Catalog Description:: Role of music in American/European film from early 20th century silent cinema to near present. Narrative features, shorts, documentary, horror, thriller, science fiction, comedy, cartoon. Film music as social/cultural practice and as part of political economy within culture industry.
Class Description:: This course provides a deep dive into the history and aesthetics of film music. We will discuss and analyze a broad selection of films and their soundtracks from different genres and decades, ranging from King Kong (1933) to Joker (2019), from Disney's cartoon characters to Jarmusch's musical protagonists. Based on important approaches to the study of film music, our agenda aims at comprehending the complex interplay of music/sound and visual media.
