- Class Notes:
- Designed as a state-of-the-field course, this course allows participants to take the pulse of American art history now, considering both its breadth of related subfields (e.g., visual culture studies, material culture studies, queer art history, Asian-American and Pacific art history, Black art history, indigenous art history, and art of the Americas), and its depth of methodological investments (e.g., speculative art history, formalist art criticism, alternative archives, feminist and critical race art history). The seminar is anchored by a selection of recent notable books, and will also expose participants to a wide range of significant articles, chapters, and short-form essays. Several weeks will be listed as TBD, to allow the group to develop its own reading program in response to pre-assigned texts. Given current trends in the field, the syllabus will include scholarship focusing on cultural history ranging from the 16th century to the present era, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, and from the North Pole to Machu Picchu.
