- This course is designed to introduce students to the history of racial inequality in American education. In addition to being semi-chronological, this course will approach the subject topically and thematically, exploring challenging developments occurring in the last 50 years, including the resegregation of public schools; the racial politics of tracking and testing; curriculum reform and the development of ethnic studies; discipline and pushout practices; racial disproportionality in special education; and the influence of race in school finance reform, to name a few. A course on race-based educational inequality inevitably grapples with the problem of unrequited disparities, resulting from limited access, white supremacy, implicit bias, family wealth, residential location, and government policies and school practices. As the course progresses weekly, students will be asked to draw up solutions to many of the challenges facing public school education.
