- Class Description:
- This class explores the history of Europe from 1500 to the present, beginning with the age of exploration and the Reformation, and covering such topics as the French Revolution, industrial society, socialism, the impact of Darwin's ideas, changes in women's lives, the rise and fall of imperialism, how art expressed the anxieties of urban life, the wars of the twentieth century, the rise and fall of communism, the welfare state, and contemporary multicultural Europe. This is an introductory course with two illustrated lectures a week and two sections. In the sections, students will learn how to analyze and write about documents people wrote in the past, and discuss in detail controversies and interpretations about social change. This is an introductory course aimed at those who wish to learn about the rise, influence and problems of the West; it is suitable for any major as well as prospective or current history majors.
