- Survey of representative cultural-historical events in Europe (German-speaking countries, Scandinavian, the Netherlands) from early Germanic times to 1700.

The premodern world remains a vital point of departure for societal projections and how we understand our society today. This writing intensive course takes an intersectional approach to the premodern period. Thinking through issues of race, class, and gender, we will read Das Nibelungenlied, Icelandic Sagas, and the works of reformers like Martin Luther and Hildegard von Bingen. Further, we will examine the portrayal of the early period in the 20th and 21st Centuries through films and discuss right-wing uses of the premodern period.
