Course Catalog Description:
Heureux de vous revoir! Because you have studied French before, you already know what a wonderful language it is. This course is designed to return you to studying the language of Les Misérables, Monet, and joie de vivre! French 1022 is an accelerated review of French 1001 followed by the material covered in French 1002. At the end of this course, you will be able to communicate about topics such as food, family, school, the environment, travel and much more. If you have had a gap of more than a year since your last French class, you need to take the EPT to place into French 1022.
Class Notes:
http://classinfo.umn.edu/?FREN1022+Fall2022 This is a blended course with primarily in-person meetings and one day of independent virtual work on Fridays. You will not meet for class on these days; however, the work you complete is an important part of your course grade. (MTWTh in classroom & F online.)
Class Description:

Heureux de vous revoir! Because you have studied French before, you already know what a wonderful language it is. This course is designed to return you to studying this global language of diplomacy and commerce, spoken from Africa to Europe to North America (including Maine and Louisiana!). Join us in learning to communicate in the French-speaking world while exploring connections between identity and the ways we spend our time or what we eat (where, when, and how), how different communities define health and well-being, the links between place and memory, as well as how our past experiences shape our future ambitions. After all, learning a new language is more than learning grammar and vocabulary!

Accelerated Beginning French (French 1022) is designed for students who have some background in French but would benefit from a review of the basics and therefore have been placed in 1022 through the Entrance proficiency Test (EPT). As such, it includes an accelerated review of French 1001 followed by the material covered in French 1002. Through this course, you will continue to expand your ability to interact in a multilingual, multicultural world by developing your identity as an effective multilingual communicator, a cross-cultural navigator, a critical and analytical thinker, and a life-long learner. You will build these skills by interacting in French with your peers in class and engaging with texts created by and for French speakers. To conclude each unit, you'll use your French skills in a project that simulates a real-world task. Throughout your learning journey, you'll continually reflect on your successes, challenges, and progress. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be prepared to continue this journey in French 1003.

Exam Format:
Short quizzes evaluate reading/listening comprehension and understanding of vocabulary and grammar. Projects evaluate communication skills in French.
Class Format:

The in-class format includes a wide range of whole-class, small-group, and pair activities.

Workload:
French 1022 is a five-credit course, so you should plan to spend an additional 10 hours a week on coursework outside the classroom. You will complete preparatory activities prior to each class session so that class time can be devoted to knowledge application and meaningful communication in French.
