- Class Description:
Glissant's theoretical work is increasingly invoked in political debates. Most recently, two contenders in the 2022 French presidential election seized on the concept of creolization to fight over such issues as migration, diversity, and national identity. At the same time, some scholars have argued that Glissant's dialogue with Deleuze's philosophy has had a depoliticizing effect on the Martinican's thought. This seminar critically examines the political currency of Glissant's theoretical work in conversation with Deleuze. The latter's concept of Difference will be approached from the perspective of Glissant's Relation to examine such topics as political subjectivity, coloniality of being, ecological commitment, or the future of cultures in globalized world.
Special attention will be paid to the specificity of literature (and art) as a mode of thought distinct from conceptual theory, and we will examine how that difference of rationality affects our understanding of Glissant's thought.
