Theoretical foundations of anthropological archaeology in historical and contemporary perspective. prereq: 8001, 8002
Class Description:
This seminar will introduce archaeological theory, in a historical perspective on the major developments and debates in the field. We will review the approaches that have been labeled culture-historical, processual, and post-processual; the methodological and interpretive implications of these approaches; and the intellectual issues shaping current archaeological discourse. In addition, we will explore the relationship of archaeological practice to the construction and reproduction of heritage. Throughout this seminar, the implications of these theoretical approaches to research design will be discussed.
