- Axiomatic and semantic treatment of propositional and predicate modal logics; problems of interpreting modal languages. prereq: 5201 or instr consent
- Class Notes:
- This is a first course in modal logic with a special focus on philosophical applications. The first third of the course will be devoted to the basic theory of modal logic(s). The last two thirds will be devoted to applying these theoretical resources to various putatively modal concepts, including knowledge, obligation, time, counterfactual conditionals, belief, and indeterminacy. Assigned readings will include both technical and philosophical texts. The course prerequisite is PHIL 1001 or equivalent. While we will begin the course with a brief review of classical propositional logic, it will be assumed that students have had some prior exposure to these or related concepts.

- Grades will be based primarily on weekly homework assignments and participation. There will also be an optional final paper.
