Course Catalog Description:: Politics, society, and culture in medieval France from the end of the Carolingians to the end of the Hundred Years War.
Class Description:: France was at the forefront of European development in the Middle Ages. It was the land of Gothic cathedrals and the site of the Hundred Years War. This course examines the development of the kingdom of France from the tenth through the mid-fifteenth centuries, focusing on the reigns of the Capetian and Valois dynasties that include Eleanor of Aquitaine and Saint Louis, as well as Charles VII. We will explore life in medieval France through texts, film, and PowerPoints to trace the foundation of the country we know today as an arbiter of taste and a center of culture. Along the way we will deal with murder, mysteries, and misconceptions.
